Lt Col Joseph M. Cummings graduated from West Point Military Academy.

A German shell struck the command post of the 2nd Battalion, killing the battalion commander, Lt Col Joseph M. Cummins and two visiting officers, Col Anthony J. Touart, and Col George A. Smith.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy.
