In preparation for college, Capt Philip E. Horan Jr. attended Central High School in Omaha, spent one year at St. John’s Military School at Delafield, Wisconsin, and another year in Europe where he attended the Alliance Francaise in Paris, France. He entered the Military Academy on 1 July 1938. He proudly chose for the Infantry, and, immediately after his graduation from West Point on 29 May 1942, he attended the Infantry Basic Officers Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. From there he was assigned to the newly activated 104th (Timberwolf) Infantry Division at Camp Adair, Oregon.

Capt Horan was hit by German small arms fire.
He was awarded the Silver Star (posthumously) for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy as Commanding Officer of Company I.
