More information

Cpl James Baumann attended high school for four years.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Dayton, Ohio on 15 December 1942.

His parents received a letter written on 5 May 1945, from Colonel Gerald C. Kelleher, Commander 414th Infantry. "Your son, Cpl James S. Baumann was killed in action on 6 April 1945 in Germany. James was buried in Ittenbach United States Military Cemetery in Ittenbach, Germany. A Catholic chaplain officiated at the service held over his grave. On the day James was killed his company was attacking enemy strong points in the vicinity of Buhne, Germany. The enemy was concentrating heavy artillery, machine gun and small arms fire on our troops but our mission was successful. James was killed instantly by shell fragments from an artillery shell. I do not believe that he suffered at all. You have the deepest sympathy of the officers and men of this Regiment in your bereavement. Cpl Baumann was held in high regard by all members of his command. He was a splendid soldier of an outstanding character. His loss will be deeply felt by all."
