More information

1st Lt Rolfe D. Jones volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in San Antonio, Texas on 27 March 1942. He was later transferred to the infantry.

He was the son of the late Major Davis Jones and nephew of Brig. Gen. O.S. Rolfe.

He was awarded the Silver Star medal postumously for actions on 10 December 1944. The citation stated: At great risk to his life, Lt Jones led his men through enemy mine fields, intense enemy artillery fire and across 700 yards of open, fire-swept terrain. When his platoon was temporarily halted by machine gun and tank fire, he called for artillery fire and led the assault on the objective. Lt. Jones was mortally wounded by machine gun fire when his platoon was only a short distance from his objective but his men, inspired by his daring intrepidity and courage, successfully secured the objective.

His brother Edwin served with the 502th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
