Pfc Robert L. Kershner Jr. graduated from Batavia High School in 1942 and was employed at Wright Corporation in Buffalo.

He enlisted in Rochester, New York on 19 February 1943. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program and studied at Oklahoma A & M and Niagara University. When the program was disbanded he was transferred to Camp Carson and sent overseas on 23 August 1944.
