S/Sgt Clifford Avery was a policeman before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 28 February 1944.

He was reported wounded in action by artillery shell fragments in his hand and extremities in October 1944 but could very soon rejoin his unit.

He was killed in action by artillery shell fragments to his face and side of his body.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.
