More information

S/Sgt George N. Figone graduated from Petaluma High School with the class of 1942. He ranked high in his studies and athletics, especially basketball, and later continued his excellent record when he entered the University of San Francisco. He was employed at a drug store and later at a shipyard on Mare Island.

He enlisted in San Francisco, California on 16 February 1943 and sent overseas on 4 December 1943.

He was reported wounded in action by a land mine explosion in Germany on 26 January 1945 and was sent to an army hospital somewhere in France for some time suffering from a fractured ankle. Early in March 1945, he left the hospital and went back into battle.

Sgt Figone had written a letter to his friend, from Germany on 20 March, in which he said that he was anxious to get back in battle. Quoting a part of his letter: "I got out of the mine explosion injury lucky. You know these 'Squareheads' can't hurt a 'Dago'. They have been trying to get me ever since the invasion but I am still kicking."
