1st Lt Robert H. Doherty attended Amherst College and was emplyed by the McDermott Chemical Supply Company in Waterbury, Connecticut.

He was secretly married to Johanna Franz three day before his departure overseas.

He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time for wounds received during the battle for Anzio, Italy. On that occasion he was hit by a bullet on his right leg while he was repairing a radio.

According to a fellow officer, Lt Doherty and several men had entered a farmhouse while on patrol and were all kiled by a delayed action bomb. German soldiers had just left the house.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Saint-Juan, France.
