More information

1st Lt Robert L. Cary graduated from Brockport High School and was a machinist at the Consolidated Machine Corporation before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Rochester, New York on 22 April 1942. He was sent overseas in July 1943.

He was reported wounded in action in the leg in September 1944 and hospitalized for five days. He suffered this wound while firing a mortar that had been manned by a soldier who either was wounded or killed near Les Magny, France. Lt Cary, noticing the mortar crew had been put out of action, crawled forward and personally operated the gun in a hail of enemy shell fire. For this action he was awarded the Silver Star Medal.

Two months later he suffered a less serious wound.

He is remembered at the Garland Cemetery in Clarkson, Monroe County, New York.
