More information

T/Sgt Ervin W. Vanderpool worked on a farm before he enlisted on 6 January 1941.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal a first time for his actions on 23 September 1943. The citation cited: "He was a rifleman in a squad engaged in a flanking attack against enemy positions in Italy. When an enemy vehicle approached his position, which was under fire from enemy machine guns, he killed the driver and six occupants with his rifle. He then crossed an open area under enemy machine gun fire to provide information which made possible the laying of accurate mortar fire on enemy forces which he had observed and to procure aid for his wounded squad leader. Upon his return to the squad he directed additional fire on the enemy which aided the company in taking its objective.
