More information

S/Sgt Robert G. Berry was a driver before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Syracuse, New York on 26 January 1942.

He was killed charging a machine gun position.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For gallantry in action on 24 and 25 September 1944 near ---, Sgt Berry's platoon was engaged in an attack on an enemy road block covered by heavy and accurate fire from enemy automatic weapons established in nearby buildings. Sgt Berry remained constantly at the head of his platoon during the assault, directing his men urging them on and hurling hand grenades himself at the enemy positions where resistance proved strong. As he was working his way to one of the squads, Sgt Berry was mortally wounded by enemy fire, but continued to reassure and advise the men near him. Sgt Berry's courage and devotion to duty were an inspiration to his comrades and reflect credit upon himself and his organization.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Saint-Juan, France.
