Pfc Jack E. Smith's father died in 1924. 1930 Census indicates that he was living with his grandparents, Jacob O. and Louise Rine.He graduated from Milton High School.
He joined the Regular Army on 18 January 1940 and served for two years in Panama. After returning to the United States he was stationed at Fort Jay, New York, and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas were he was a baker. He was then transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington until December 1944 after he was sent to Texas for intensive training. Before he was sent overseas he was stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland. He had in been Europe for only six weeks before his death.
