The citation of his Bronze Star stated:
"For heroic achievement in connection with military operations agains the enemy on January 20, 1945. When heavy small arms and mortar fire prevented the securing of medical aid for three casualties, Tech Sergeant Doty volunteered to get help to them. Driven back by the enemy fire, Sergeant Doty directed artillery smoke shells so that evacuation was made possible. He placed one man on a shelter half and dragged him to safety. Sergeant Doty then assisted in flushing the sniper who had caused the casualties. His quick thinking and courageous actions are in accordance with the highest traditions."
