Pvt Edward Schreier was a truck driver with the Rudolph Transfer Company before he enlisted in August 1943. He first trained with an anti-aircraft unit in Camp Haan, California before he was transferred to the infantry. He then trained at Camp Atterbury, Indiana and was sent overseas in October 1944.He was taken prisoner in the vicinity of Schlausenbach, Germany on 17 December 1944 and was imprisoned at Stalag IX-A in Bad Orb, Germany.
