Pvt Clifton was reported missing in action in the vicinity of Winterspelt, Germany on 17 December 1944.

His remains were discovered at the Frankfurt Mausoleum Cemetery in Germany and it is therefore most likely he was taken prisoner.

He is interred at the Ardennes American Cemetery. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery
