Pvt Joseph P. D'Antonio was an orphan and was raised from his 15th year by Mr. and Mrs. Ryan.

He was employed by the Royal Crown Cola Company and later by the Rock Island Arsenal.

He enlisted in Peoria, Illinois on 7 October 1942 and went overseas in november 1944.

According to a newspaper article in The Dispatch of 25 May 1945, Pvt D'Antonio was killed when he was driving a jeep, loaded with hot food to the men in the front line. In his desire to get the food to the men quickly he cut across a field where his jeep set off an enemy mine. The concussion and wounds killed him instantly.

At the time of his death a brother was serving with the Navy.
