Sgt Louis A. Van Dyk graduated from Holland High School and attended Hope College, before he attended Northwestern University.

He worked in a grocery and in the clearing house of the Federal Reserve bank of Chicago.

He enlisted in February 1943 and was selected for the A.S.T.P. program for which he was sent to Baylor University. From there he was sent to Louisiana State University and the University of Tennessee for advanced engineer training. When the program was disbanded, he was transferred to the infantry.
