Sgt Patrick R. Maschke graduated from Tyrone High School in 1940. He attended the University of Notre Dame for three years.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland on 10 June 1943. He served at Camp Fannis, Texas. He was an aviation cadet and was enrolled at the Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. In April 1944 he was transferred to the infantry and was sent overseas in December 1944.
