More information
Pfc Anthony A. Cupano Jr. worked at a service garage. He enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 15 October 1942 and went overseas in October 1944.
An army chaplain notified his parents somewhere in June 1945, that their son, who was previously listed as missing in action now was regarded as killed on that date. The facts supporting this final conclusion where as follows: The 2nd Battalion to which Pfc Cupano was attached made an assault across the Sauer river near Echternach, Luxembourg, prior to an attack on the German Siegfried line. This was a particularly hazardous crossing because of the intense artillery, mortar and machine gun fire, it was subject to, and also because the river was swift and at a flood stage. The boat which Pfc Cupano was assigned capsized mid stream after it was hit by enemy mortar fire. As soon as the turmoil of battle ceased at the river, a thorough search was made. The bodies of the other men in the boat that had been killed were found, but no Pfc Cupano. So he is presumed to be killed.
His brother, Pvt Dominick Cupano, was killed in May 1943 in North Africa. He is buried at the North African American Cemetery in Tunisia.
