1Lt Frank T. Gerard graduated from college and was a professor.

He enlisted at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 1 September 1942.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. The citation cited: For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 417th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 7 February 1945. First Lieutenant Gerard's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 76th Infantry Division and the United States Army.

His brother 1st Lt Gus Gerard, was buried next to him at the request of his family.
