Pfc Robert L. Kucinski attended Onondaga Valley Academy, where he was a member of the school band. At 9 years, with several other boys he formed the Mighty Midget band, which played at many entertainments in Syracuse. For a time he was employed in the Herald-Journal composing room. He was also a member of the Salvation Army band.

His father was a member of the Army of Occupation in Germany after the first World War and he married there. Pfc. Kucinski's mother died about eight years before her son was killed not far from her girlhood home.

He enlisted in Syracuse, New York on 16 March 194 and was sent overseas in December 1944.
