Pfc Walter R. Linde attended the River Road Grammar School and Wilson Junior High School in Eugene, Oregon before he enlisted in Portland, Oregon on 23 June 1943.He trained at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin and in Texas and was sent overseas in December 1944.
