More information

Pvt John E. Bango enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 29 April 1944. He received his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama and went overseas as a replacement in November 1944.
The Silver Star Medal was presented to his widow posthumously, the citation reads as follows: “Pvt Bango, while under heavy automatic weapons fire, crawled forward for 125 yards with his machine gun in order that he could place more effective fire on the enemy. In this position he continued to fire despite the intensity of the enemy counter attack remaining at this weapon until he was fatally wounded by enemy fire. His actions were directly responsible in preventing the success of the enemy counter attack and further aided in holding the pillbox being used by friendly troops as a command post. His undaunting courage and unhesitating action in the face of enemy fire reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States”
