S/Sgt William Kercsmar attended high school for one year.

He enlisted in Allentown, Pennsylvania on 23 August 1943.

He was wounded in the early days of the invasion of Normandy and evacuated to a hospital in Great Britain. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. He rejoined his unit on 26 July 1944.
