Hyman Adler attended Hazleton Senior High School, graduating in 1936 as class salutatorian. He attended New York University to study aeronautical engineering.

Before volunteering for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in New York City, New York on 15 January 1942, he was employed in photographic work.

He was commissioned at Selman Field, Louisiana, in December 1942 and was sent overseas in May 1943.

The airplane was shot down by anti-aircraft fire over the target. Eight crew members survived and were taken prisoner, two men were killed.
