Levi Irwin attended O'Keefe High school and Young Harris college. He was employed as a chauffeur.

He joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army in Jacksonville, Florida on 3 June 1941.

An enemy aircraft hit a wing which blew off. Four crew members survived and were taken prisoner, four men were killed.
