Pvt Bert H. Smallacombe attended high school for two years and was employed at the Leck Construction Company before he enlisted at Fort Dix, New Jersey on 8 April 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his stomach and leg.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.
