Sgt Emanuel H. Sowder graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1943 and was employed at the Inland Manufacturing Company.He enlisted in Cincinnati, Ohio on 9 October 1943.
He died from artillery shell fragments to his head.
The Distinguished Service Cross citation reads in part: "Sgt Sowder accompanied a patrol of 14 volunteers to take an important section of high ground occupied by the Germans. The patrol was trapped by enemy fire, but Sgt Sowder advanced upon one of the enemy guns and with an automatic weapon killed those operating it. When other enemy gunners swung their weapons upon him, Sgt Sowder continued firing upon them to permit his comrades to make their way safely."
