T/5 James D. Haley graduated from St. Canicus Parochial School in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania in June 1935 and continued his education at Mahanoy City High School where he graduated on 12 June 1939. He worked a few different job in Mahanoy City and relocated with the family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he worked for Sharp and Flynn located at Stokley Street and Roberts Avenue Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
On 16 February 1942 James D. Haley registered with the Mahanoy City Local Draft board (2) as required by law for all men who would be turning the age of 21 in 1942. His employer at the time was still listed as Sharp and Flynn located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He enlisted in Allentown, Pennsylvania on 22 February 1943. On 1 March 1943 Jimmy entered on to active duty and reported to Fort Gap, Pennsylvania for induction processing and classification.After completion of processing, Jimmy was assigned to basic training and infantry replacement training and completed all of his training by July 1943. In July 1943, Pvt Haley was assigned to the 71st Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division reporting directly to the Divisions training location at Fort Lewis, Washington. Pvt Haley continued training in company and squad tactics with the 71st Infantry Regiment for the remainder of the year.
On 5 September 1944 the 44th Infantry Division en masse, embarked from the Port of Boston headed for the European Theater of Operation. After 10 days at sea, the 44th Infantry Division debarked at the port of Cherbourg, France.
On 13 November 1944, the 44th Infantry Division led the offensive to secure passage through the Vosges Mountains with the 71st Infantry Regiment assigned to seize the city of Sarrebourg, France. It was during this offensive that then Tech 5 James D. Haley suffered mortal wounds from a German artillery barrage on his unit. Records indicated that he was killed instantly.
