Pvt John C. Mawhinney attended college for one year and was employed at the Viscose Company plant in Meadville before he enlisted in Erie, Pennsylvania on 27 August 1943. He was sent overseas in September 1944.He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his stomach.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.
