S/Sgt Charles J. Cardoni enlisted in Peoria, Illinois on 23 October 1942.

He was a graduate of Lanphier High school and worked at the Chicago Screw Co. before he enlisted. He received his training at Camp Roberts, Calif. In May 1943 S/Sgt Cardoni was sent overseas and took part in the invasions of Africa and Sicily. He then was ordered to England to train for the invasion of France. After D-day, he served in Belgium, Holland and Germany. When wounded, he was hospitalized in France until Jan. 8. With an armored division, Sgt. Cardoni took part in the fighting in Belgium and along the Rhine in Germany. Since induction, he had never been home.
