T/Sgt Roland E. Kellum graduated from James Ford Rhodes High School in January 1935 where he participated in various sports including football, tennis and basketball. He also served as vice president for the Student Council and treasurer for the Hi-Y team. He graduated also from Cleveland College.

He was an insurance salesman.

He enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio on 7 May 1942.

He took part in all the campaigns of his unit, North Africa, Sicily, France and Belgium.
