Pfc Robert E. Johnson enlisted in Los Angeles, California on 3 September 1943.

His brother, A.J., was taken prisoner in the Pacific and died on one of the infamous hell boats which were torpedoed by the U.S. Navy, not knowing there were prisoners of war on board.
