2nd Lt Thomas C. Mooney graduated from Coughlin High School in 1936 and was employed by the Hotel Astor in New York.He enlisted in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on 10 May 1941. He was trained at Pine Camp, New York, from where he was transferred to Big Springs, Texas, where he earned his wings and was commissioned.
According to S/Sgt Leonard A. La Marco, a surviving crew member, they were attacked by enemy fighters. Soon after they dropped their bombs, the #4 engine was shot out of the wing and #3 engine was burning.
Five crew members survived and were taken prisoner, five were killed.
