S/Sgt Gerald A. Heavner enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 21 January 1942.He was raised together with his brother Glover at the farm of his uncle and aunt Jasper and Mollie Morral after their mother had died. Before Gerald enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Forces, he worked for his relative Guy Heavner on a farm in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Prior to his enlistment he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Parsons, West Virginia.
From the Missing Aircrew Report:
"The aircraft was in the 2nd Low Group. It was seen with #1 and #4 engines out, with black smoke pouring out. Wheels were down and bombs were believed to be dropped. The left wing dropped off. A/C was believed to blow up and disintegrate. One chute was observed."
