"Al and I served with the 17th Airborne Division, at camp McKall, North Carolina during our basic training in 1943. We became close friends and spent many happy times on visit ot the local towns while on pass. On 4 January 1945 Al was wounded at Pinsament, Belgium during the "Battle of the Bulge". Al was sent back to England for recovery. Al rejoined the 17th at Chalons, France in February 1945, in time for operation Varsity, the crossing of the Rhine river into the heart of Germany.
We lifted off from Reims, France on the morning of 24 March 1945 in the largest airborne combat operation ever conducted. Al was killed a few hours later over Wesel, Germany."
