More information
Sgt Eugene R. Ferry enlisted in Los Angeles, California on 27 July 1942.His father was born in Romania.
The following, mostly tragic family history, could be pieced together by several documents and newspaper articles:
After quitting his job and going on a drunken binge for several days, his father committed suicide on 27 May 1917 on the front porch for his home by shooting himself. A week later, his daughter and sister of Eugene, Lucille, died on 5 June 1917 of diptheria.
Most likely his mother was unable to take care of her son after two such losses and Eugene went living with his maternal grandmother, Jennie Kerr.
By 1929 Eugene was serving in the military by that time and was in a military hospital in Texas. The 1930 census shows him still being a patient in the Texas military hospital and shows him lying about his age at that point because he stated he was born in 1907. Actually he was born on 11 January 1911.
His first marriage was to Ethel Hopkins in 1935. At sometime before 1940 he apparently divorced her and married Jeanne Ferry, who is listed as his wife on his draft registration card. By the time he was killed, he was married to Dorothy M. Ferry.
