Pvt J. B. Akin attended County Line School while the family resided in Electra.

He volunteered for the U.S. Army in May 1943, received his training at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, Richmond, Kantucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. He was sent overseas in November 1944.
He was wounded on 7 January 1945. After recovering he returned to his unit.
