Pfc John C. Johnson was sent overseas in June 1944 and had just returned to his company after being wounded in action when he was killed.His brother, T/4 Carl E. Johnson, also served in Europe, his brother, Pfc Virgil Johnson, was stationed in the U.S. and his brother, Pfc Wm. F. Johnson, served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific at that time.
