John Elinski enlisted on 30 March 1943 at Wilkes Barre, Luzerne County, Pennslyania. He was a graduate of Coughlin High School and before he entered military service he worked for the A.C. & F. at Berwick. He received basic training at Camp Mackall and completed glider training at Camp Forrest in Tennessee, before he went overseas in August.
