S/Sgt Chester G. Quick attended Blairville High School and was graduated from the Indiana High School with the class of 1942.He enlisted in Altoona, Pennsylvania on 30 march 1943 and was sent overseas in August 1944. He had been wounded in action on 7 January 1945. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. He was sent back to active duty in March 1945.
S/Sgt Quick was a passenger on the glider #43-41175. He was shot in the abdomen after being taken prisoner.
Statement from 2nd Lt. W.F. Griggs:
"On 24 March 1945 I was pilot on a double tow glider mission. My glider number was 43-36918 and the co-pilot was F/O Richard W. Varley. I was in position 102 and in position number 101, the short tow, was glider number 43-41175, which was flown by Captain Andrew J. Jamison (pilot) and 1st Lt Samuel G. Savory (co-pilot). When we reached the drop zone, we encountered smoke and could hardly see the ground. When Captain Jamison released, we did the same and made a 90 degree turn to the left following Captain Jamison in trail. We encountered flak and small arms fire at 200 to 300 feet. Captain Jamison began a turn to the right and I turned to the left. This was the last time I ever saw his glider and at that time it seemed to be flying alright."
