1st Lt Charles W. Roche graduated from Chester High School and worked in a shipbuilding company before he joined the Regular Army in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 15 October 1940. He first served in the Panama Canal Zone and in Central America. When the war broke out, he was transferred to the U.S. and was sent to Officers' Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was commissioned in March 1942. After advanced infantry training from 9 May to 9 August 1944, he was promoted to first lieutenant and sent overseas on 17 September 1944.

His brother Arthur was taken prisoner on 18 December 1944 in Belgium.
