S/Sg King Bailey enlisted in the Army on 3 March 1942 in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. He went overseas in December 1943, serving in England until D-Day and then went to France.

He was reported wounded in action on 22 June 1944 in France. After recovering he and returned to duty on 1 September 1944. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
