Pfc Alexander Rutkowski attended Franklin Junior High School and was employed by the J. I. Case Company before he joined the Regular Army on 21 November 1939. After four years in Panama, he returned to the United States and was sent overseas with the infantry in December 1944.

His brother, Cpl Joseph J. Rutkowksi, was killed in action in Saipan while serving with the Second Marine Division, on 15 June 1944. He is buried at Honolulu Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii.

His brother Edmund who fought together with Joseph at Saipan was reported wounded in action during that campaign. He recovered sufficiently to take part in the Tinian engagement. He received a medical discharge.

He was first buried at th Temporary American Military Cemetery ofFoy, Belgium.
