After his graduation from Au Sable Forks high school in 1936 he assisted his father in the management of a riding stable at Camp Douglas at Silver Lake and at Interbrook Lodge. Keens Valley. He worked for a time on the whiteface Mountain tower project, helping in the construction of the elevator shaft and buildings atop the mountain. Prior to the outbreak of the war he was employed in Massachusetts. He enlisted at Camp Upton and was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia for his basis training on 21 February 1941. He went overseas in January 1944. First to England then to France on D-Day. He saw action in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.
