Pfc Joseph A. Nash worked at a funeral home prior to entering the service. He also was a drummer and he played for various bands throughout the city.He enlisted in New York City, New York on 14 July 1943.
Pfc Nash was standing guard over a key pontoon bridges. The Germans sent commandos in rubber rafts down the river to blow them up. PFC Nash discovered a group of these commandos while making his rounds and was killed in a burst of machine gun fire.
