Pfc Frederick S. Howell enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 21 July 1943. Under the ASTP program, he was sent to Cornell University and was transferred to the infantry when that program curtailed. After further training in Camp Polk and Fort Breckenridge, he was shipped overseas in October 1944.
