Pfc Frank H. Kempf graduated from Tucson High School in 1943, where he was a catcher and a captain for the state championship high school baseball team in 1943. He also starred on the Junior American Legion baseball team in 1940, 1941, and 1942. He also played basketball.

He enlisted in Phoenix, Arizona on 21 July 1943 and he was first attached to the medical corps, then transferred to the University of Indiana where he was a mechanical engineering cadet under the Army Specialized Training Program. When the specialized training program ended, he transferred back to the medical corps then later to the infantry for which he trained at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. He was sent overseas in October 1944, going into active combat duty in early January 1945.

His brother Seaman 1st Class Robert L. Kempf, served in the Pacific.
