John Manahan graduated from Manual Arts high School and attended the University of Southern California for two years. Before working for the in May 1941 fire department he was lead man at Douglas Aircraft. As a fireman he was greatly interested in athletics and was a member of the department bowling team. He also was on the baseball team from Battalion 11.He volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Los Angeles, California on 4 February 1942.
His brother also served during WWII. He passed away on April 19, 1991.
The airplane was shot down by enemy fighter planes. Five crew members survived and were taken prisoner, five men were killed. 2nd Lt Manahan bailed out but his parachute did not open.
