As the plane was headed back, it was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire. Due to the heavy damage to "Graham Cracker", it crashed in Barnstaedt (West of Merseburg) at 12:30 o'clock. Seven of the crew members were found dead, two had parachuted out before the crash (they were captured by the Germans). The seven dead crew members were buried on 25 August 1944 in the Village Cemetery at Barnsteadt.In 1945 the bodies were disinterred and reinterred at Margraten.
